Hi! Sarah here.
I’ve been a fan of science fiction and fantasy since age two, but somewhere in my early teens, I felt I’d run out of good books to read. So now, I write sci-fi and fantasy tales for readers in their preteens and early teens. When I’m not writing, you might find me listening to Adventures in Odyssey, playing chess online, eating chocolate yogurt or a bagel (but not both together), or wrapped in a fuzzy blanket while reading a good book.
Why I Write
I grew up on Christian classics like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. I also read other fantasy novels, both old and new, and watched science fiction shows and movies with my parents.
All these stories awakened in me a longing for tales of friendship, courage, and self-sacrifice set in other worlds in which my ever-active imagination could play and explore.
(I particularly loved stories involving starships and interstellar travel, which Narnia and LotR unfortunately lacked 😉.)
But…
As I grew up, I found it was really difficult to find anything new to read.
And many of the more recent books and shows I’d happily consumed when younger now began to bother me as I became more aware of how they subtly (or not-so-subtly) undermined traditional Christian values.
I longed for new books to read that brought together the brilliant world-building and fun characters I’d found in newer sci-fi and fantasy stories with the deeply Christian heart of the classics.
Books that would feed my imagination while simultaneously guarding my heart and growing me into a better person.
You know how I said I’ve been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy since I was two?
Well, I’ve been telling stories since I was that age too (just ask my mom), and I started writing them down around age eight. It was in my teens, though, that I became serious about pursuing my dream to become a published author.
After completing my first major project in my late teens, I began to wonder what I was supposed to do next. Edit it, somehow? Publish it? How did that all work, anyway?
Then I joined the Author Conservatory, a college-alternative writing and entrepreneurship program for gifted young writers.
For the past two years, I’ve been studying story structure, writing craft, and publishing principles under the guidance of professional editors and published authors.
More than that, I’ve been challenged by the godly example of my mentors and peers to grow as a person and in my relationship with God.
What You Can Expect…
When you pick up one of my stories for preteens and early teens, here’s what you can expect:
- Stories that celebrate and nurture traditional Christian virtues such as kindness, compassion, and sacrifice.
- Relatable, realistic characters who mess up and make bad choices sometimes, but who are fundamentally trying to do what’s right, and who grow stronger and more Christlike over the course of the story.
- Deep, layered settings that invite you to step into the story and let your imagination run wild.
